The DM-3500 uses a scanned, triangulated CCD camera/laser diode combination to capture the height profile of a package as it passes the unit. A simple tachometer is used to monitor conveyor speed; a laser photoeye is used for package detection. Both the tachometer and laser photoeye are provided by Accu-Sort with the DM-3500. The unit's internal Dual-DSP processor board then calculates the length, width, height, volume and position of the package based on this data.

The DM-3500 can be configured to provide a "confidence rating" to the host computer along with the dimensions and/or volume of the package. The confidence rating is based on the difficulty that the system had in determining the dimensions of a package, and can be useful for identifying damaged parcels or improperly packaged products. Package orientation information can also be included in the message to the host, allowing for advanced package tracking through the system. The DM-3500 package information can be used in conjunction with Accu-Sort scanning systems, to provide increased flexibility in adjusting focus on the scanners, and to link package dimensions and bar code data.
